"Exploring alternatives to the traditional canvas."
Last year, I went from sketching generic still-lifes in high school to creating original concepts & paintings in college. This summer, I set another challenge for myself: to bring my art style to something more accessible than a gallery frame. It’s introduced me to so many unexpected surfaces: sneakers, window blinds, t-shirts, earrings. This is honestly one of the coolest projects I’ve ever done, and I’ll probably never stop even when it’s over.
I like messing with concepts & representations: making flowers bloom off of a Hawaiian shirt, or the personification of a waterfall. You’ll also see a lot of portraits and bodies in my work— curves & lines are really satisfying to draw, and you can tell countless stories with one pose.
Everything I’ve ever created has brought me to this point. No one is ever really finished, or perfect, or at the end of their trajectory.
I’m Ekemini (or Kimi, or Kem), and this is my arc.
